New ESMA Guidelines: Business as usual for our Climate Transition Funds

The revised ESMA (European Securities and Markets Authority) fund naming guidelines, which come into effect on the 21st of May 2025, aim to reduce greenwashing and improve transparency. Funds using the term Climate Transition must now have 80% of investments aligned with environmental objectives.

Our Position

Aegon Asset Management’s climate transition portfolios already meet these requirements, with the allocation of investments scored as transitioning or above within our established climate framework.

Our Global Short Dated Climate Transition, Global Short Dated High Yield Climate Transition and Sustainable Funds all comply with the new regulations well ahead of the deadline.

Our proprietary climate transition framework has positioned us favourably, requiring no material changes to our investment approach.

While these regulations may challenge some passive funds, as active managers with a consistent and credible approach to climate transition, we continue to offer our clients competitive returns and net-zero alignment by 2040.

Commenting, Anne Scott, Global Climate Solutions Lead (pictured), said: “We designed our climate transition framework to support the drive to real-world change, not just meet regulations. That’s why our portfolios already achieve ESMA’s new guidelines – delivering both competitive returns and a genuine environmental impact for our clients through allocation to companies who are better aligned to net-zero goals.”
